OPPUK (Organization for Strengthening and Development of Community Enterprises) and SERBUNDO (Union of Plantation Workers in Indonesia) together with five other Trade Unions in North Sumatra are involved in the protest in commemorating World’s May Day 2016. The five trade unions include the United Federation of Indonesian Metal Workers (F-SPMI), North Sumatra Independent Workers’ Union (SBMI Sumut), F-SP Kahut SPSI, Industrial Workers Union and Indonesian Independent Trade Union.
OPPUK with the union of Workers / Trade Unions incorporated in North Sumatra Workers Trade Union Alliance (APBD SU) submitted 8 demands to Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla regarding labor issues. The action carried out by about 800 workers was conducted at the DPRD office and the Governor of North Sumatra.
In the dialogue with the Governor of North Sumatra represented by the Head of the Department of Manpower and his staff in agreeing that the demands of APBD SU will be conveyed to the central government while the issue of local authority will be followed up. Special demands on the implement of freedom of association in palm oil plantations and the act of unlawful perpetrators of the union in palm oil plantations will be followed up immediately by the Office of Manpower and Transmigration of North Sumatra Province where the head of the agency signed a statement stance proposed by APBD SU.
